Spur Gears Vs Helical Gears - What's the Difference?

Spur gears and helical gearboxes are the most common types of gears. Although their application may be similar, there are several differences between the two. 

Helical Gears

Helical gears work more smoothly and silently as compared to spur gears. In helical gearboxes, the teeth are placed at an angle to the rotational axis. This allows them to have greater tooth strength and higher load-carrying capacity. A major difference between helical and spur gears is that helical gearboxes can transmit power between both parallel and non-parallel shafts. Spur gears, on the other hand, can transfer power only between parallel shafts. 

Spur Gears

Spur gears are the simplest and most common type of gear. They have straight teeth that run parallel to the axis of the gear. Spur gears are the most economical gears as their simple design facilitates easy designing and manufacture. Spur gears can become noisy when used at high speeds. 

Advantages of Helical Gears

  • Helical gearboxes have angled teeth that work more gradually. As a result, helical gears offer smoother and more silent operation at high speeds

  • Helical gears are the best option for high-load applications as they have a higher number of teeth that come in contact with each other. They are also more durable as compared to spur gears. 

  • Helical gearboxes evenly distribute the load among several axes. As a result, there is less wear and tear

  • Helical gears can transfer motion and power both among parallel and straight-angle axes

  • Helical gears have found wide-scale application in the hotel and catering industry machinery and automotive and air conditioning industries. 

Advantages of Spur Gears

  • Spur gears can be very effective in achieving large gear ratios in slow and medium speeds

  • They are effective in transferring power up to 50,000 KW

  • Spur gears are the easiest to design and manufacture. As a result, an actuation project that involves spur gears can be deployed faster

  • These gears provide a constant and stable gear ratio

  • A spur gear is more efficient than a helical gearbox

  • As the teeth on spur gears are parallel to the axis, no axial force is produced. As a result, gear shafts can easily be mounted using ball bearings. 

  • Spur gears are popular in the vending or security system industry.
